Health Privacy Notice

We at OpenAI (together with our affiliates, “OpenAI”, “we”, “our” or “us”) respect your privacy and are strongly committed to keeping secure any information we obtain from you or about you.

This notice explains our information and privacy practices when you use the Health feature in ChatGPT (“Health”) and supplements the OpenAI Privacy Policy. Some of the information you provide to Health in ChatGPT may constitute “Consumer Health Data” as that term is defined under Washington state’s My Health My Data Act and Nevada’s Consumer Health Data Privacy law, and this notice provides certain information required under those laws.

We designed Health to provide you a dedicated, secure space for health and wellness-related topics, powered by ChatGPT and any apps you choose to connect. We encourage you to use Health for any health-related queries.

1. Personal Data collected in Health

Just like our regular ChatGPT service, we will collect Content (as that term is defined in our Privacy Policy) you provide to Health. This includes any prompts or content you upload, such as documents, files, or images you make available to Health. Examples of information you might choose to provide to Health include:

  • Medical records, lab and test results, and prescription information from your medical providers that you choose to upload, or connect to Health through integrations we offer, including information about diagnoses, symptoms, and treatments.
  • Measurements of vital signs and movements, such as heart rate, sleep data, estimated calories burned, steps taken, and workout details, if you choose to connect other devices and services to Health, such as Apple Health or Strava.
  • Other information you choose to provide through prompts and other Content you provide to Health about your physical or mental health status, such as information about your health history, symptoms, and health care services you have sought or seek to learn about, and fitness and wellness goals.

2. How Personal Data in Health is used

We use the information provided in Health to provide that service to you, including to help you learn about wellness and health topics, prepare for visits with medical providers, and interpret fitness metrics and work toward fitness goals. Health includes its own Memory feature that allows us to remember certain details and preferences from your past Health conversations and any connected apps or services, and provide you with more tailored responses.

By default, we do not use data in Health content to improve our foundational models that power ChatGPT. A limited number of authorized OpenAI personnel and trusted service providers might access Health content to improve model safety, unless you have opted out(opens in a new window) in ChatGPT. Learn more(opens in a new window) about the choices you have and when OpenAI might access your content.

We also use the information provided in Health:

  • To communicate with you, such as to provide you customer support;
  • To prevent fraud, illegal activity, or misuses of our services, and to protect the security of our systems and services; and
  • To comply with legal obligations and to protect the rights, privacy, safety, or property of our users, OpenAI, and third parties.

3. Disclosures of Personal Data in connection with Health

To assist us in meeting business operations needs and to perform certain services and functions, we may disclose information we collect to vendors and service providers (called “processors” under some privacy laws), such as providers of hosting services, customer service vendors, cloud services, and support and safety monitoring and improvement services. Pursuant to our instructions, these parties will access, process, or store Personal Data only in the course of performing their duties to us.

You may use Health to interact with connected apps (“Apps”) we offer within Health. Apps let you work with external tools like fitness trackers so you can get more done in Health conversations; for example, when connected Health can search and reference information from Apps, or run research across multiple connected Apps. Learn more(opens in a new window) about how Apps work generally in our services, including what information is shared with Apps and how our services use Apps data. Make sure you understand the terms and policies of connected Apps before you share information with them by connecting Apps with Health. You can also connect Health with your electronic medical records using OpenAI’s third-party partner, b.well. When connected, ChatGPT may send b.well information from your ChatGPT prompts so that b.well can retrieve relevant information from your medical records. Learn more about how b.well uses your data in their Terms of Service(opens in a new window) and Privacy Policy(opens in a new window).

As described in our Privacy Policy, we may also disclose Personal Data: in connection with a business transaction; if required to do so to comply with a legal obligation, or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a legal obligation; to protect and defend our rights or property; if we determine, in our sole discretion, that there is a violation of our terms, policies, or the law; to detect or prevent fraud or other illegal activity; to protect the safety, security, and integrity of our products, employees, users, or the public; or to protect against legal liability.

We do not sell Personal Data of our users, including any Personal Data collected through Health.

4. Choices and controls

We’ve designed Health to give you control over the information it handles.

  • Apps. You may be able to connect Health with a variety of third-party data sources and tools, such as electronic health records, medical providers, fitness trackers, and other third-party apps. You control which Apps are integrated to your account and you can remove or add new Apps at any time in your account settings by navigating to the “Apps” section.
  • Memories. Health can store memories and incorporate any memories you have saved in your main ChatGPT account, all based on your account settings under “Personalization” and your instructions in Health. Your main ChatGPT account will not access memories you create just within Health. You can search, delete, and manage your Health memories in Health under “View Health Memories”. See more here(opens in a new window).
  • Training. By default, we do not use content in Health to improve our foundational models. Learn more(opens in a new window) about when OpenAI might access your Health content and the controls you have.
  • Deletion. You can delete or archive any chats within Health at any time. See more here(opens in a new window).

5. How to exercise your rights

OpenAI offers choices, including options to export or delete your Personal Data, through our Privacy Portal(opens in a new window). When you make a request in our Privacy Portal, this will encompass Personal Data collected through Health. You can also contact us at dsar@openai.com.
