Sensor Metrology & Test Engineer

Consumer Products - San Francisco

OpenAI is seeking a Sensor Metrology and Test Engineer to define and execute advanced metrology, validation, and factory-level testing strategies for cutting-edge hardware sensing systems. This role involves close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams—including hardware architects, computational sensing engineers, and AI researchers—to ensure precise, measurable, and defensible sensor specifications. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing high-volume manufacturing test strategies and state-of-the-art metrology methods, shaping the future of sensing technology at OpenAI.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine measurable and defensible hardware specifications to ensure sensor performance meets the rigorous demands of advanced AI systems.

  • Design, deploy, and optimize advanced metrology techniques for characterizing sophisticated hardware sensing systems (vision, depth, radar, IMU, capacitive sensing, etc.).

  • Lead the validation processes and define factory test strategies throughout the entire sensor manufacturing supply chain.

  • Establish, expand, and maintain a cutting-edge metrology and validation laboratory to support research, prototyping, and manufacturing.

Ideal Candidate

  • Strong foundational knowledge in physics, with expertise in optics, electromagnetics, and sensor-related physical phenomena.

  • Proven track record in developing and successfully deploying high-volume manufacturing tests for complex sensing systems.

  • Experience in consumer electronics product development, including system-level design and integration methodologies.

  • Experience developing automated test equipment (ATE) and test software for both laboratory and production environments.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Proficiency in physics-based simulation and modeling tools (Python, Zemax, MATLAB, COMSOL, etc.) for sensor characterization and optimization.

  • Background in statistical analysis, data science, or machine learning techniques to analyze and optimize test and metrology data.

  • Prior involvement with calibration and validation of multimodal sensor fusion systems.
